ELEVATION MODELS TO SUPPORT NEW RESEARCH INITIATIVES ON LANDSLIDES AND GLACIERS

2013 - Nepal

Climate change has accelerated the dynamics of glaciers in the Himalaya. Utrecht University (Netherlands) and HiView have undertaken jointly a research program on climate change. Earlier applications of Flying Sensors (drones, UAV) showed good results in landslide monitoring in Tasmania and was the base to extent to Nepal. Linked to the glacio-hydrological research being conducted in the group a pilot project has been started to derive high resolution DEMs of a glacier in Nepal and HiView has generated the raw data for this project.

With this project, HiView contributed to science by using its ultra-high resolution imagery to a better understanding of glacier’s behavior under changing climates.
